For chrome finishes, simply wipe the hardware with a soft, damp cloth. You can also use a high-grade chrome polish to restore the original satin finish and add shine to hardware.
For oil rubbed bronze finishes, wipe the hardware with a small amount of vegetable oil and a soft cloth. Be careful to only use a very small amount of oil, since too much oil can leave residue and come off on your hands when you touch the hardware. You can also use household detergents and a mild abrasive powder to restore the metal color of the hardware without seriously affecting the compound of the metal. If you do use a detergent, follow up with a paste wax.
All clear-coated and lacquered finishes should be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth or a mild soap. Avoid all paint thinners and strong cleaning products on hardware since it will destroy the protective coatings of the pieces and cause rapid discoloration and oxidation.
Spending a small amount of time every other month to clean your hardware will ensure that it stays looking its best for years to come!
